ABSTRACT:
Lifestyle intervention and Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES) are critical components in the prevention and management of type 2 diabetes and its associated complications. This abstract reviews the clinical efficacy of structured lifestyle programs—focusing on the "triple threat" of medical nutrition therapy (MNT), physical activity, and sleep hygiene. Current evidence underscores that nutritional therapy is no longer a "one-size-fits-all" caloric restriction but a personalized approach ranging from low-carbohydrate to Mediterranean-style patterns. Furthermore, the integration of behavioral psychology—such as motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)—is essential to address "diabetes distress" and ensure long-term adherence. The 2026 landscape of self-care has been further revolutionized by Digital Therapeutics (DTx) and wearable technology (CGMs and automated insulin delivery), which provide real-time feedback and empower patients to make data-driven decisions. This review emphasizes that while pharmacological advances are significant, the sustainability of glycemic remission and cardiovascular health is heavily dependent on high-quality, continuous education and the socioeconomic support necessary for patients to successfully navigate daily self-care.
